CDL has acquired yet another hotel property in its international portfolio- the 256-room freehold Bespoke Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi. The purchase was made through its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, M&C Sakura TMK for 8.5 billion yen ($78.5 million). This marks CDL’s third hotel acquisition in 2023, following the Sofitel Brisbane Central in Australia in March and Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong II in South Korea in July.

Just a four or six-minute walk to Nagahoribashi and Shinsabashi stations respectively, the hotel is located in one of Osaka’s commercial hub – Shinsaibashi. It enjoys proximity to popular shopping districts and malls, including the city’s well-known Midosuji Avenue and Shinsaibashi-suji shopping street.

Kwek Leng Beng, CDL’s group executive chairman, said in a statement that the acquisition of Bespoke Hotel Osaka is in line with the company’s global real estate portfolio expansion. He added that Japan’s tourist industry has seen a strong comeback after the pandemic, making this a timely and good opportunity to invest in.

The hotel’s location also stands to benefit from several tourist attractions in Japan. Universal Studios Japan, one of the world’s busiest theme parks with 12.4 million visitors in 2022, is located in Osaka. In 2025, the city will also host the World Expo which is expected to welcome 30 million visitors. Moreover, in 2030, an MGM Integrated Resort is set to open, which includes a casino, entertainment venues, shopping, hotel and MICE (or meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) facilities. It is estimated to witness 20 million annual visitors upon completion.

CDL’s portfolio in Japan, currently inclusive of the Millennium Mitsui Garden hotel in Tokyo Ginza and rental apartments in Yokohama and Osaka, now looks to gain more traction in the region as a result of this acquisition.
